12 Aug 2008 - Reach for the Sky 08/12/2008 12:00 AM Reaching for the Sky As humans we are always searching for new highs. 03 May 2008 - An Alaska Heli Experience 05/03/2008 12:00 AM We arrived in Haines on the ferry from Juneau. The 3 hour ferry ride over was amazing, when the peaks of Alaska finally started to break thru we knew we were in for a real treat. Haines is a tiny little in the middle of nowhere Alaska. Once we got checked into the hotel we decided to head out to Mile 33 Road House and the Alaska Helisking operation run by Seandog. The drive from town was unreal; we saw huge moose, so many bald eagles they started to look like ordinary birds. This is a great way to get out of the hustle and bustle of city life. |

10 Jul 2006 - RIKSGRANSEN: Snowboarding\'s Forgotten Land. 07/10/2006 12:00 AM Diary excerpt from TALES of Hit and Miss (dated May 25, 2006). One fine sunny day in a land far away, Sweden\'s Ingemar Backman smashed a backside air so far out of a Riksgransen quarterpipe that to this day still maintains awe in the air of the obsessed snowboarder\'s mind. Still suffering a bit of obsessive snowboarding disorder, ten years and numerous snowboarding seasons later I finally make it to this snowboarding ‘promised\' land, albeit the snowpack has nearly thawed out and I have a plumber slash drummer slash skateboarder named Bryce Stacker in tow. Oh… and he\'s from Bathurst and he films stuff, but that didn\'t fit. Despite less than average snow conditions, it\'s a treat to make it up to Riksgransen in search of the ‘holy grail\' – that one quarterpipe that spat Ingemar and his Atlantis so f…king high into the northern sky and on to every cover of the December 96 snowboarding magazines. |

30 May 2006 - MUST Japan Tour of Yuku 05/30/2006 12:00 AM After two early casualties of the harsh Australian summer we 10 fearless intrepid MUST pioneers set out for the far away snow fields of Japan in the creature comforts of a Boeing 737. Easily manoeuvring through the perils of Sydney\'s chaotic airport the team said goodbye to English and welcomed the cultural experience of JAL airlines. 9h 25mins later we landed in the clasps of Kansai airport near Osaka in central Japan where we set about satisfying our basic needs: cash, airport hotel, food and sleep, in that order. |

10 Mar 2006 - Take a Hike - Daisetsuzan National Park, Hokkaido Japan 03/10/2006 12:00 AM Daisetsuzan National Park The Hokkaido High Country can be found only one hour’s drive time from Furano. From the highest point of Hokkaido in the north at Asahidake (2290m) to the volcano of Mt Tokachidake and the peak of Furanodake (1912m) in the south, this mountain range is breathtaking in terrain and scenery. When boarding at Furano on a clear day you can see this amazing mountain range tantalizing you with it’s bowls and ridgelines. The knowledge that sitting and relaxing in the thermal baths at Ryounkaku Onsens at 1280m and taking in the vistas of the Daisetsuzn, after a days riding and hiking is simply to good to refuse. |

14 May 2010 - Heli boarding in Austria - Freeride Austria Ltd is for snowboarders only! 05/14/2010 12:00 AM When I think of destinations for heli skiing, first that comes to mind is Alaska followed by the Canadian Rockies and then most probably New Zealand. So I was surprised to hear of an Austrian heli operation based out of Schruns, near Arlberg. However to my great delight this operation proved to be a superb heli boarding company that by nature subscribes to the ‘Board the World’ philosophy of sharing one’s passion for snowboarding with other snowboarders. |
